Golden Circle Tour:
Visit the geothermal area around the incredible spouting hot springs of Geysir and Strokkur on the Golden Circle tour. The Great Geysir gives its name to all the hot springs in the world. Though Geysir is hardly active anymore, the very impressive, Strokkur erupts every 4-8 minutes and shoots a column of water up to 40 metres up in the air.
Continue to the picturesque waterfall Gullfoss ('Golden Waterfall'), located in the canyon of Olfusa river. Explore the waterfalls edge, experience the the forces and beauty of untouched nature and feel the mist of the glacial water on your face. The waterfall gives the illusion of falling straight into an abyss, but in reality, it falls into a crevice which is 32 metres deep.
Proceed to the Þingvellir National Park, a place of fascinating geology and picturesque landscapes. The Mid - Atlantic Ridge – the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates is clearly visible here. Gaze with awe at the line where Iceland is slowly being pulled apart as North America veers west and Eurasia moves east. Þingvellir is also a site of great historic interest, its plains playing host to the Icelandic parliament Alþingi, founded in the year 930 AD.
Arrive back in Reykjavík at 4:30pm. Relax for a few hours before joining the Northern Lights tour at 9pm (16 Oct – 14 Mar) or at 10pm (25 Aug – 15 Oct & 15 Mar – 15 Apr).
Northern Lights Tour:
The tour will take you to the place where these Northern Lights are most likely to be seen, based on weather forecast.
The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, are a spectacular natural phenomenon, spraying the Arctic sky with a fantastic riot of colours. The Northern Lights originate from the sun, where large explosions and electronic storms throw flares and solar particles deep into space. These clouds of solar particles are caught by the Earth’s magnetic field on the south and north poles. The solar particles collide with the atmospheric gases and create this surreal light effect. Northern Lights can be seen when certain weather conditions are fulfilled, usually during crispy cold and tranquil evenings.
After the Northern Lights Tour, you will be dropped back to the starting point.
